A well-known Sri Lankan Beach, Unawatuna is located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka just a couple hours by train from the capital in Colombo. The beach is long and crescent-shaped and my favorite of the beaches we visited for the combination of beach, where we stayed, and the town area!
Where I Splashed
At the farthest end of the beach the water is quite shallow and gets nice and warm. It's great if you just want to sit and relax in the ocean. This far end was pretty quiet so I enjoyed that. There was a little rock cove as you can see in the picture that you could wade out to where there was more shallow water. I was going to hangout on those rocks until I got close enough to see there were tons of crabs hopping around on them! Thus, I retreated to the shore ;)
The only downside of this end of the beach is there is no real cover. The beach is exposed so I recommend lots of reef-safe sunscreen and an umbrella if possible. Along the main part of the beach there are more restaurants and chairs with umbrellas set up which is also an option. Where The Locals Splash
Another reason why I loved my time at Unawatuna Beach was getting to see mostly Sri Lankans at the beach. It was the weekend and there were Sri Lankan families having a great time together at the beach, creating memories to last a life time. Of course when they see someone fair like me, the children are excited to say "hello" and practice any other English words they know which is so precious and so fun. I love these genuine interactions with locals during travel and it's why I would rather sit on a towel at the far end of the beach where they are at as opposed to renting a chair with an umbrella where the other tourists are. The Sri Lankan people are so nice :-)
