While there are a number of options for traveling longer distances in Thailand, when we went up to Chiang Mai we opted to fly on Thai Airways. It's true that there were some nominally cheaper flights on other airlines, and there is always the sleeper train, but to be honest... I just wasn't feeling that this time.
What Does It Cost?
The flight between Bangkok and Chiang Mai is just over an hour and we booked "early saver" seats at 1320 baht per passenger including taxes. That's about $35 USD. Not too shabby!
There's Free Food?!
You're welcomed on board with lovely smiles and "wais" ( ไหว้ common greeting like a mini-bow)
and before long you are getting your snack! After flying cheap on Spirit airlines so many times in US, getting any sustenance on a short flight is a foreign concept, but a welcome one in my book.
How cute are the little boxes that the snacks came in? Ahhhhh... LOVE IT!
The long rectangular boxes were great fun- trying to recognize each picture on the top was a challenging way to pass the time. It was also an efficient way to hand out the good AND made me feel like I got a present. Aww... thanks Thai Airways! <3
Okay, so what's actually IN the box?
A sweet little package of goodies awaits you. Each "snack" box we got came with a sandwich. Like... a homemade-wrapped-in-plastic-wrap-sandwich. For real. The only problem? If you don't like mayo, you will be hungry. :( Every box we had (4 flights on Thai Air) consisted of a mayo-laden sandwich.
On the upside, there was more in there. To the left was a fruit juice which is perfectly resting in a plastic cup which you can't see. Peel back the plastic and enjoy! The cup underneath is waiting for some coffee or tea to fill up it's belly and your box has creamer and sugar if you desire to use that. On the right was a little dessert treat. We don't really know what this one was. Shaped in the Thai Airways insignia and topped with shredded coconut, we describe it as a sweet corn... something? underneath and it was really enjoyable. Wish we got that on each flight!
Nevertheless, this is a very nice package for a free "snack" on a flight that is only about an hour long.
Obligatory Airplane Window Photo
In order to keep up with clichés and expectations, enjoy this airplane window view photo compliments of... me! ;-)
And I'll tell ya what, it's a great view to enjoy your lunch to.
Final Verdict: Thai Airways Is A Win!
I think it was a great value for the convenience, great service, and snacks provided. I will definitely fly on Thai Airways again in the future.
Have you flown on Thai Airways? What did you think? What's your favorite airline in Thailand or do you prefer the train or some other way to travel longer distances? I'd love to know!!
