I snagged a groupon for Hello Fresh a few weeks back and finally set up my profile. There are countless meal delivery services that I have been wanting to try for ages now. I’m curious about the experience, the recipes, ingredients, convenience, and value. Let’s get started!
Delivery
Shipping in recycled materials and promoting further recycling is literally written all over the hello fresh box. This is important as a service like this has the potential to create a lot of packaging waste. I was so happy to see Hello Fresh does NOT use horrible styrofoam coolers to ship in like that one time I triedOmaha Steaks. The box is insulated with a recycled liner and contains some cooler packs. The cooler packs can also be emptied safely and recycled. Each meal ordered comes in it’s own brown paper bag. In that bag is all the ingredients for that meal except for the meats. The meats are placed separately and vacuum sealed, but as you can see in the picture below there was some meat juice that escaped those packs somehow.
Finally, I love that Hello Fresh has made their recipes simple, easy to follow, and beautiful - something you actually would want to keep and use again as you can see in the photo above
Cooking
I’m not great at cooking pork. No matter how hard I try, I always seem to overcook it and that makes me sad. So I was determined to follow the Hello Fresh instructions to a t and not ruin this pork meal! Follow along as I prep and cook!
Here’s a look at all the ingredients to make this meal.
First step, wash the produce and chop it up!
Get the potatoes roasting.
Perfectly roasted in the Smart Oven Air
Sear the pork and finish it in the oven (or smart oven air) along with the green beans.
Versatile Pyrex 8x8 Baking Dish
Make the pan sauce.
I used a well seasoned cast iron pan
Plate it up!
How Was It?I have to admit... it was delicious! The whole meal was simple, yet well balanced and flavorful. I took the pork out of the oven several minutes early and it was great. Probably the best pork I’ve done to date. Still, I wish I would have taken it out a couple minutes sooner still. When you let meat rest the temperature continues to rise so even if its perfect temp out of the oven, it will slightly over cook once it rests and you go to slice it. But that pan sauce was *incredible*! It really made that pork come alive! DH remarked that it was really good and that is high praise from one who specifically does not like pork dishes. [Bacon is a whole other story, of course] I can see why this dish is a“Chef’s Choice” on Hello Fresh. The recipe indicates a 30 minute meal. It took me about 45-50 minutes from chopping to plating. Not too shabby. The serving size was appropriate for us, but I can see how it might not be enough food for some, as we are both fairly slim builds. The green beans were a bit lacking in quality. They were recommended to use within the next 5 days but honestly they looked a little sad considering they had just arrived. This was the main reason I decided to make this meal first, for fear the green beans would reach a irreversible state. I really enjoyed the Figgy Balsamic Pork recipe from Hello Fresh. I felt quite accomplished with the finished product. I would eat this meal again and it has given me confidence to try to cook pork again as I had sort of given up on it a while ago tbh!
