Splittr App Review - How Not To Get Ripped Off When Traveling With Friends

Splittr Expense Tracking App Review

Traveling with friends can be a ton of fun. You create lots of memories that strengthen your bonds of friendship for years to come. Still, traveling with friends can bring some challenges and awkward moments. Money can become an awkward subject. If you end up fronting a lot of the expenses for a trip and want to recoup those, as you should, how can you find a way to do so without feeling awkward, cheap, or having the other person feel like you’re ripping them off because they probably don’t remember all the money you fronted for them?

Splittr App

Before my last group trip I found this app called Splittr. It helps you track and split expenses and you could use this for travel or every day life. The free version is great, but I ended up buying the full version for a couple of bucks (and I’m not one to pay for app downloads in general) and I love it!

Features of Splittr App

Add a new “Group”
- You can name this the title of your trip if you’re using this for travel.
- You could also use it to track business expenses or a household budget.
You can add “Members”
- Add the names of each person or family traveling with you
When adding expenses you can enter a lot of details such as the category (food, accommodation etc), date, photo (receipts), notes, and so on.
You can also adjust how the expense is split. You can select which member initially paid for the expense, who benefited from it, and if you have the premium edition, exactly what the split should be.
- For instance. If you spent $10 on food, but your friend’s food cost $6 and yours $4, you can note that rather than splitting it evenly in half and you getting stuck paying for part of their food.
On the other hand, when your friend foots a bill, you also enter that into the app. Or they can, because you can add members to each group so they can see the running tab. The running tab will be adjusted for each member in the group as to how much they owe who, and who owes them what!
At the end of your trip you can “Settle Up”. The Splitter app actually creates a great spreadsheet under “Status Report” that gives you the entire breakdown of your trip expenses. If someone you travel with doesn’t have the app you can send them this spreadsheet as PDF or CSV.

In Summary...

I think the Splittr app is awesome and worth the few dollars to upgrade to premium. Even if you don’t travel in a group, this can be really handy for ANY travel expense tracking. It would also be great for business tracking and receipt logging as well as keeping your household budget in check.
