How to get around Sri Lanka varies depending on where you are at in the country. There are trains, public buses, Tuk-Tuks, and taxis to name a few. Sometimes being able to just order a ride is super handy and worth the cost. We found this to be quite affordable in Sri Lanka. Download these apps for transportation in Sri Lanka:

1. Uber - well known world wide

2. Pick Me - Sri Lankan car hire app. I recommend you do not sign up until you are in Sri Lanka and have your local phone number. Once you enter your phone number it cannot be changed. So I had entered my US number when I downloaded the app and in Sri Lanka I couldn’t change it to my Sri Lankan number. Sometimes a driver was trying to call me, but couldn’t due to the number being incorrect. Hopefully PickMe fixes this. Still, this is the app we primarily used and it worked well over all! It allows you to order varying sizes of vehicle including tuk-tuk!!

Maps

I always recommend downloading offline maps for your travels. This way, regardless of whether or not you purchase a local SIM card to have data access, you will be able to see where you are at on the map and you can essentially find you way around. My favorite offline maps are:

Communication Apps

Communicating in English went generally well for us during our trip to Sri Lanka.
Other common languages include Sinhala and Tamil as the most popular languages here.

1. ​Google Translate - Always recommended no matter where you’re traveling. It can be a life saver and save a lot of potential frustration on either end. It’s not perfect, no, but it is a tremendous asset!
   
   
   
2. Whatsapp - popular messaging app used world over. Some Sri Lankan’s will use this app to message you if you request a ride on PickMe, for instance. Or to make phone calls.

3. Viber - another similar app used for messaging and making calls.
