Let’s be clear. Not all beeps are friendly. Not all beeps are cute. Not all beeps are missable.
In fact, most beeps are aggressive, irritating, and half the reason you can’t wait to go travel and get out of the hustle and bustle of daily life. But these are different beeps. Friendly beeps. One of the main and best ways to get around the countryside of Sri Lanka is undoubtedly by a while tuk-tuk ride. Hang on because some of the drivers are wild, the terrain can be a bit rough, and obstacles in the road aplenty. As the wind rushes through your hair a melody starts to play “beep!” As you barrel around a turn. “Beep-beep!” As your tuk-tuk driver waves to someone off in the distance... You see, beeps in the country side translate differently to beeps in the dense thicket of traffic in Colombo. Beeps in Ella, for instance, mean “Hello!” “Hey, neighbor!” Or “careful, I’m coming by” in the most polite sense. Beeps in rural Sri Lanka, I believe, are the best type of beep - a friendly beep. I can’t help but smile every time I think of those hairpin turns on dirt roads in a little tuk-tuk set to the tune of “beep!” ... “Beep-beep!” *wave* and how can I help but miss the friendly beeps of Sri Lanka?
