After doing an amazing Sri Lanka Safari at Udawalawe National Park you may want to book in some beach time. Head down to Tangalle Beach to start your Sri Lankan beach hopping experience.
What is Tangalle / Rekawa (Rekwalla) Beach Like? | Sri Lanka Travel Guide
The Tangalle Beach and Rekawa (Reckwalla) Beach areas are definitely more quiet, relaxed, and local style beaches in Sri Lanka. I am referring to the end of Tangalle Beach which is farthest to the east. At this beach we met both local Sri Lankans as well as Indian tourists. At this end of the beach you will find (at least at the time we visited) no beach amenities and commercialism. It feels quite natural and untouched.
The majority of the sand was of light color and you could find many shells as you got closer to the shore.
You can walk out onto some rocks and observe little pools of water full of tiny life or you can just relax like this dog on the shelly-sand. We saw a number of dogs at this beach and none of them posed a threat.
Turtle Watching at Tangalle / Rekawa (Reckwalla) Beach | Sri Lanka Travel Guide
One thing that makes the Tangalle / Rekawa (Reckwalla) area very unique would be... sea turtles! Depending on when you visit you may have the opportunity to participate in a Turtle Watch where you see a turtle lay eggs or at times see baby turtles hatched! Turtles eggs are typically laid at night and 80-150+ eggs may be played at one time! This is "The only community based turtle protection program" and you can learn more about it at www.turtlewatchrekawa.org although if you have trouble getting that page to load you can try thisSri Lanka Eco Tourism site. This building houses a small, educational "museum" or informational displays about the turtles and various tracking they have done which is neat. Entrance is free, but you can make a donation.
