Around 2017 I started to slim down my closet. Having stayed roughly the same size from my teenage years through my twenties, I kept a lot of clothing because it all "still fit". Through clothing swaps and donations, I paired things down and my personal style started to take shape. Through most of my 20s I embraced any color of fitted crewneck because it worked perfectly with jeans, leggings, and skirts. I could dress it up with statement jewelry or keep it low key. I basically wore a crew neck almost every day year round (cardigans over top in cooler months), and no one ever noticed.

All those crew necks were fast fashion, cotton/stretch blend (97/3?) and honestly… they were good quality. They must have been. They have held up through an immense amount of wash and wear. Many of them are getting pills and worn in a way that tells me it’s time to phase them out. So I’m venturing into new basic territory that I have avoided for a long time - V-necks. (Also ordered some crew necks, review to come here)

I decided to giveV-necks a chance again to add some neckline variety without losing the styling ease of basics. The reason I wore so many crew necks before is I found them simple to style, always modest, and versatile. A v-neck comes with more variables - how low is the V? How loose is the tee? Even a higher v-neckline takes effort to wear if the fit is loose and you are trying to be conscious of who can see what, you know? So anyhow… I snagged a 2 pack of Encircled’s the fair v-neck (black and white).

Material

The Fair V Neck is made of eco-friendly rayon from Bamboo and organic cotton that is knit and dyed in Toronto!
The fabric weight is light, making these ideal t shirts for hot summer days or for use as layering pieces.

Fit

Encircled’s Fair V Neck is described as fitted at the shoulder then falls straight down to the hip. So it’s a loose, straight fit. This is not a fit I am used to purchasing! I find the fit is a little more generous up top than I would historically prefer. Just showing the extra material on my frame as it is a straight cut top.

Styling The Fair V Neck - Leggings & Dressy Joggers

The fair V neck is a nice length for wearing with leggings and still having coverage. To be noted, though, is the white is a pretty light fabric. So as you can see below it’s easy to see the leggings through an I personally am not a fan of that at all. I really wish the white t was thicker. The trim at the V neck is perfect and I wish the rest of the shirt had that weight!!

Another very comfy outfit is with the dressy sweatpants- The fair v neck tucked in to those gloriously pleated and pocketed dressy joggers is another popular outfit combo.

Styling The Fair V Neck - Skirts & Dresses

The place I feel most at home is definitely dress clothes. I live in skirts and dresses and feel perfectly comfortable spending the day dressed up. The fair V neck can easily be styled tucked into a pencil skirt, under a blazer, under a cotton picnic dress, knotted over a high waisted skirt… just to name a few!

Encircled Clothing Review - The Comfy Button Up Review

A button up top has been on my “in search of” list as I curate my personal style so when encircled was designing their version of a classic button up, only comfy, I had to give it a try!

Material - The Comfy Button Up

The Comfy Button Up is made with Lenzing Modal. This is a plant based fabric made from the pulp of beech trees. It’s soft and drapey, but more structured than other Modal pieces from encircled, which is a good fit for this style of top.

Does it wrinkle? It can! The first time I wore it out of the shipping package and smashed in my small closet space it was a bit wrinkly. I took a fabric steamer to it and here are the before and after pics. The first picture to the last picture where both sides have been lightly steamed are only 3 minutes apart. Literally. And after years of not wanting to iron things, I have to admit I kind of like the process of taking those few minutes to do something so simple as steaming a garment that I care about and want to keep in good condition for years to come.

Fit - The Comfy Button Up

The Comfy Button Up is designed to be fitted across the shoulders and have a loose, drapey fit over the body and through the sleeves.

I always get XS in encircled tops as I find the sizing generous. I have a petite upper frame and I really don’t like to feel like I’m swimming in fabric, so I generally prefer a fit and flare type of style.

First impressions on theComfy Button Up fit - good fit overall, but could be a little more fitted for my preference. Also, I may have short arms, but I feel the sleeves are a bit long and I want to appreciate the sleeve details more!

With encircled pieces I find the more I wear them the more I love them so I look for that to be the case with this top as well. Learning to style different silhouettes is fun and can be really rewarding as you try new things!

Final Thoughts

This is a beautiful piece, thoughtfully made, that I will wear and love for years to come, I am sure of it. It’s available in a nice variety of neutrals and colors for the first run so you can find something you will love! I’m still on the hunt for a true, classic button up though. Most likely white or slightly off white. If you have a good rec for a petite, let me know! I just really want the look of that classic collar. I love the look of layering it for different outfits, which just can't be achieved with this piece.

Encircled Revolve Dress Review

This is a piece that taught me so much about what I love and what works on my body and what doesn't. I bought the revolve dress in 2018 and after trying to wear it over a few years with great optimism, here is what I discovered. I am a petite pear and didn't find the cut (generous and off-centered in the mid section) to be flattering on me when worn as a dress. The neckline is quite wide for my frame meaning I was constantly fighting with my bra straps peeking out. I also found the drape of the cowl neck wasn't falling how I wanted, and I think this is because of the width of the garden. I mostly wore this piece as a tunic or top, reversed. I really like the look of the drape at the back! This piece, as with any encircled piece I've ever purchased, is extremely comfortable. I have learned in recent years that if I find myself constantly tugging or readjusting a garment then it's not a garment for me - even if it is beautiful, well made, and absolutely adored by others like the revolve dress.

Key Learnings

I like a boat neck / straight neckline, but only if it is proportionate to my narrow frame or has those little bra strap snaps sewn in.
I prefer a structured drape over a cowl-style drape (think Comfy Dress Shirt - CA or US) This way I get the flattering, effortless effect of the drape but the peace of mind of a structured neckline.
I feel most confident when I can highlight my waist as a petite pear and a fit and flare style is better than something spacious at the mid section and clingy at the thighs

How I Style The Everyday Twist Top Review

Let's start with the basics.

For reference, this is a Plum Purple Everyday Twist Top in size XS. I generally wear 4-6 and I'm just over 5'. XS is my perfect size in the everyday twist top.

Oh and also: In almost all of the following pictures I am wearing it with a purple pencil skirt and a white crew neck. This just shows you how many looks you could get with this top and the same skirt, but it could easily be replaced with a variety of skirt styles and colors, dresses, other types of pants etc.

So you can see the easiest looks here.

Tied in the front is simple enough. I wanted to give you. side profile so you can see it does add some volume at the midsection, in case that concerns you. You can, of course tie it wherever you want, high or low, to get the most comfortable or flattering look for your figure and particular outfit.
Tied in the back gives a high neckline and I think it looks quite chic at the front!
Open cardigan is obviously the easiest look. Throw it on and go! It's honestly a little long on me because I am petite, but I still love it.
Draped cardigan - snap both ends together and place around your neck. (Or bring both ends together behind your head and then snap them together. lol. same thing, just whatever is easier for you)
Wrap top - Snap the ends together, twist them, then bring up around your neck!

Each look has a different silhouette to suit various styles and body types as well as unique outfits!

How To Style The Every Day Twist Top Encircled

My favorite way to wear the Everyday Twist Top in reverse is to pair it with some statement jewelry. Etsy is one of my favorite places to go to find independent artists making really unique and special jewelry.

Rather than doing the basic knot at the back when you reverse the Everyday Twist Top, here are two alternative ideas.

You can make a cascading side knot. If you look closer at the photo It should help. I wrapped the ends around my waist off to one side and knotted it, one time after another until I got to the end. You can snap it closed!
Wrap it multiple times if needed for your body type and snap together. Tuck snapped end underneath and smooth for a fitted look.

Wearing The Everyday Twist Top with Jeans here to give you an idea of the length on my frame. On the right you can see it wrapped into a fitted top like #2 above, except not worn in reverse with the high neckline. I like to wear the top like this, but not with these jeans necessarily. (Ps please ignore the random brown belt I'm wearing. It's my only regular width belt to wear with jeans and my random red Bali elf sandals.)

The skinny belt is one of my most dear and cherished wardrobe companions as a petite pear. Here are a variety of looks using skinny belt, whether to highlight the waist or to keep the everyday twist top in the right position like in the third picture underneath "full length belted".

Start with the basic styles and then just try adding a belt! Could be a coordinating color or a contrasting pop of color.

Also adjust the neckline- play with the angles to see what flatters you and what you prefer! Maybe you want to tuck in one of the sleeves for a bold look?!

But first, let's talk a bit about body suits....

What is the purpose of a body suit?
At it's core, a body suit provides a smooth, fitted, tucked in top look without weird bunching or the chance of it coming untucked.

Why are bodysuits so popular?
If you love wearing high waisted bottoms - high waisted pants, high waisted shorts or skirts, or body skimming pencil skirts, a body suit gives a very flattering fit and finishes the look perfectly.

The problem(s) with bodysuits

While bodysuits have the potential to provide a polished final look, there are some problems.

Bodies are different, torso lengths are different. If the fit isn't right for your body, it's going to ride up and cause discomfort. It's impossible for a brand to make a body suit that will fit every body, unless *maybe* the only product they make is a bodysuit.
The bathroom thing.... You either have to go back to being a 4 year old in a one piece swimsuit and pull the whole thing down to pee. Or pull the fabric off to the side and hope for the best. Alternatively many brands have snaps taking you back to the baby days. No just kidding. Snaps can be good for some people, but a lot of people don't like them and you still have to multitask with that fabric to make sure it's not "in the way"...which isn't ideal.

Okay, so is it just a t-shirt?

Well, no. It's definitely not a t-shirt. But yes, it is a top. Most tops, especially from encircled, have a different fit - some are very drapey, some are fitted at top and flowy, some are oversized, some are boxy. The Unbodysuit looks to me like a fitted top made from the most amazing, soft, sustainable material you'd want touching your skin and I'm here for it!

What I Love

Sleeveless & 3/4 Length Sleeve Option - Great for different seasons and purposes. 3/4 length is amazing for under sweaters. You don't need two long sleeves bunching at your wrist, even if you do want a layer underneath for added warmth or as a barrier against wool or just to add longevity to your sweater.
I love that it is designed for this. I've never owned a body suit but in the summer time I love skirts and dresses and thus live in some sort of base layer shirt and slip shorts to create a similar outcome of a bodysuit without the annoyances of a body suit. The thing is, the shirts aren't meant for this/the cut isn't designed for this. It works, but not completely the same smooth look. (PS Encircled - if you ever see this.... slip shorts on the horizon? Bought my last pair in 2015 and would be nice to get away from the nylon/span blend and big brand) That's were having a design team trying to get you the benefits of a style while removing or minimizing the downsides of it can make a big difference!

What I'd Like To See

Looks like the initial run of The Unbodysuit is black, navy, mauve, and maybe sapphire blue? I'd like to see a light neutral in there - whether white or off white/ivory etc. Even in the winter this is a great piece to have. I'm thinking of a light knit sweater that I want to wear something underneath and I want it a similar light color, just as a for instance!
